Post WHW or Great Glen - taking a dog?
First of all let me say how much I've enjoyed reading your accounts of both of these routes. I loved the spirit with which you did the walks.

A couple of years ago I did a large chunk of the WHW in 24 hours as part of the Caledonian Challenge (http://www.caledonianchallenge.com/). Now I would like to either return to do the WHW or take on the Great Glen way at a sane pace - with my dog in tow.

He is a small but robust dog who would be on a lead for most of the time. I would probably camp and would probably use a baggage service rather than carry everything. I wondered if had any advice on which might be the best route to take on or any other tips?

Take care. I shall look forward to the day when you can take on the walk to Cape Wrath and write about it!

Hi

You could take your dog on either the West Highland Way or the Great Glen Way. The only thing to take note of is that the Conic Hill section of the West Highland Way is closed to dogs during the lambing season - roughly April/May - though an alternative route is signposted at this time. It would be a shame to miss climbing Conic Hill which is one of the highlights of the walk so I would suggest you avoid walking the West Highland Way at that time of year.

If you have the time, have you considered combing the two routes together to make a longer route from Milngavie to Inverness? Both are amazing walks.

If you're planning on using campsites you should check ahead to see if they are dog friendly as this is not always the case. Using a baggage service does tend to restrict you to paid for campsites and limits your flexibility.

All the best
